A Year & A Day Summary

For Southern Hemisphere Wiccans

Sabbat Dates

You're in the Southern Hemisphere if you live south of the equator:

  • Australia, New Zealand, and area
  • most of South America
  • most of Oceania
  • the southern third of Africa
  • some of the southern Asian islands

Since the sun travels counter-clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere, it changes how some of the Directions and Elements appear to you (compared to how they appear to Northern Hemisphere Wiccans).

So this page will give you, all in one place, the Southern Hemisphere-appropriate Wiccan stuff.

Possible Adaptations

If you live south of the equator, you have multiple choices:

wicca-spirituality Blue Pentacle Button   You can use the Northern Hemisphere Directions, Elements, Sabbats, Deosil direction, etc.
wicca-spirituality Blue Pentacle Button   You can switch the South and North Directions/Elements and Sabbats, but keep everything else the same as in the North
wicca-spirituality Blue Pentacle Button   You can switch everything to align the Southern experience, except East with West
wicca-spirituality Blue Pentacle Button   You can switch everything: South with North, East with West — including the Deosil direction.

Deasil & Widdershins

If you live in the Southern Hemisphere, the Moon and Sun move counter-clockwise across the sky.

This changes the invoking and devoking directions (opposite to the way it's done in the North) —

wicca-spirituality Star Button   deasil will be counter-clockwise
wicca-spirituality Star Button   widdershins will be clockwise

(Again, not all Southern Hemisphere Witches do it this way; many choose to keep it as it was historically created in the North, so it's your choice.)

Dragonsong's Abbreviated Table Of Correspondences

For Southern Hemisphere Wiccans

1   I'm afraid that if you want to switch West & East's correspondences, you’ll need to make your own chart. Wicca-School Winking Witch © Wicca-Spirituality.com I doubt many people will want that one.

As said elsewhere in this course, I personally think it's best to leave East with Air and West with Water the same as in the North. And switch everything else.

So here's a Directions/Elements correspondence chart for the Southern Hemisphere that does just that. 1

Moon Phases in the Southern Hemisphere

The Northern and Southern Hemispheres of the Earth look at the Moon from different directions.

Blue Half Moon Waning mini © Wicca-Spirituality.com
The Moon's phases in the Southern Hemisphere grow from left to right. So the Waxing Moon starts on the left side of the Moon...

... and becomes Full, and then wanes on the right side of the Moon.

NOTE: A Waxing Moon is one that's growing fuller, no matter where you love, and a Waning Moon is always one that's getting smaller.

The difference, though, is which way the Moon curves as its waxing.

2   Many people (even many Wiccans) consider a Dark Moon and a New Moon to be the same thing, but it seems obvious that they are not.

A Dark Moon is invisible; a New Moon is the first three days of the first crescent's appearance.

I suspect we ignore the dark of the Moon just as hotels try to do without a 13th floor — fear of the power of the Goddess.

But each phase has a very different magickal energy, so we'll look at all five individually.

3   For more details, see below: Memory Aids for Waxing vs Waning Moons.

4   Like the Sabbats, the energy of each Full Moon seeps into the day preceding and following it, so while it is ideal to celebrate the Full Moon on Her day, it's also completely acceptable to do so on the day before or after the Full Moon.

New Moon

Sickle New Moon Phase © Wicca-Spirituality.com
The New Moon (or Sickle Moon) is the day (or three), when you can first see the crescent first beginning to grow again. 2

Waxing Moon

Waxing Moon Phase © Wicca-Spirituality.com
The Waxing Moon is the entire period that the Moon is growing in size — after the first few days of the New Moon, and before the eve of the Full Moon. 3

Full Moon

Full Moon Phase © Wicca-Spirituality.com
The Full Moon is when She is as big as She gets, and perfectly round. For magickal purposes, the day before and after are essentially equally potent with the Full Moon energy. 4

Waning Moon

Waxing Moon Phase Gibbous © Wicca-Spirituality.com
The Waning Moon is the entire period as the Moon shrinks, except for the day following the Full Moon.

Dark Moon

Dark Moon Phase © Wicca-Spirituality.com
The Dark Moon is, as the name suggests, the day when you can no longer see any portion of the Moon, and She is entirely in shadow, hidden. For magickal purposes, the day before is almost equally potent with the Dark Moon energy, but this shifts as soon as you can begin to see the new crescent emerge.

Memory Aids for Waxing vs Waning Moons

To remember which is which, you might imagine that the curve in your left hand between forefinger and thumb holds the Waxing Moon...

As the left hand is the magickal-receiving hand (for most people), as you hold the Waxing Moon you will be receiving more and more Moon Energy as the week goes by.
