Using a pendulum is an ancient method of divination. It is also called dowsing.
For millennia, and still today, people dowse to find water, when wanting to put in a well... appropriately also called water witching. 
In modern times, they have been used to locate deposits of metals and gemstones, Earth ley lines, and even tunnels and weapons by the US marines in Vietnam!

How to Make a Pendulum

The first step is, of course, to make a pendulum. This is a beautiful yet simple pendulum shown here. You can buy them, or make one yourself. (Click on the graphics to buy.)
There are two parts to it: a pendulum pendant and something string-like to hang it on.
It's necessary for the string or chain to be very fluid and flexible, or it won't work properly.
You can use practically any materials to make one, but it's always best to use something that is meaningful or beautiful to you.
Many people like to use a crystal that is threaded on a string or chain. Others use a favourite necklace. (This is handy, because it's always with you when you need it!) But any gemstone or river rock, a ring, even a carpenter's plumb bob will do just fine for most people.

If you find that you have difficulty getting clear answers, though, you might want to go with a standard crystal pendulum pendant, because crystal has properties that aid psychic divination.

Any divination tool must cleansed and blessed before use. Even when it is brand new -- especially then -- you want to rid it of any energies it has collected.
